Donald Trump says he requested a FIFA review after Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red card suspension.
US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he personally asked FIFA to review Folarin Balogun’s one-match World Cup suspension, saying the governing body made the “right decision” by allowing the striker to play.
Balogun was due to miss the United States’ last-16 match against Belgium after receiving a straight red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina. However, FIFA suspended the automatic one-match ban for 12 months, making the forward available for selection.
Trump said he spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino but insisted he only requested a review and did not pressure officials. He argued that Balogun’s challenge was an accidental collision between two players and not worthy of a suspension.
The decision has sparked controversy. Belgium’s football federation criticised FIFA’s ruling, while England manager Thomas Tuchel warned it could create uncertainty over future disciplinary decisions.
The suspended ban means Balogun, who has scored three goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is eligible to face Belgium in the knockout stage.
