Resident Doctors declare indefinite strike over allowance dispute

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans to embark on a total and indefinite strike starting from 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

The decision follows what the association described as the Federal Government’s move to halt the implementation of the Professional Allowance Table (PAT), a key component of doctors’ remuneration.

According to NARD, the suspension of the allowance structure undermines agreements previously reached with the government and worsens the already challenging working conditions faced by resident doctors across Nigeria.

The strike is expected to affect public hospitals nationwide, potentially disrupting healthcare services, including emergency care, outpatient services, and surgeries.

This development comes amid ongoing tensions between healthcare workers and the government over welfare, salary structures, and working conditions. In recent years, similar strikes have led to significant strain on Nigeria’s healthcare system, with patients often forced to seek expensive private care or face delays in treatment.

Key Demands and Growing Concerns

Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has called on the Federal Government to immediately restore the Professional Allowance Table and address other outstanding issues affecting doctors, including unpaid arrears and poor working conditions.

The association argues that failure to meet these demands could lead to further brain drain, as many Nigerian doctors continue to seek better opportunities abroad.

Healthcare experts warn that an indefinite strike could have serious consequences, especially for vulnerable patients who depend on public hospitals for affordable care.

The Federal Government has yet to issue a detailed response, but past negotiations suggest that talks may resume to prevent a prolonged shutdown.

As the deadline approaches, uncertainty looms over Nigeria’s healthcare system, with patients and medical professionals alike hoping for a swift resolution to avoid another nationwide crisis.
