‘I will oppose Obi if he seeks re-election after 2027 win’ — Aisha Yesufu

Aisha Yesufu, a social activist, says she will oppose Peter Obi if he contests for a second term after winning the 2027 presidential election.

Yesufu made the statement on Monday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme.

She said her position is based on Obi’s repeated promise to serve only one term if elected president.

“If Mr Peter Obi gets into office and decides to do more than one term, I will oppose him with everything in me,” she said.

Yesufu, who is a staunch supporter of Obi, insisted that he had consistently maintained the one-term position even before the 2023 election and reaffirmed it in private conversations.

“He gave his word, and if he has given his word, he has to stick to it,” she said.

According to her, she personally sought clarity from Obi after the 2023 election and received confirmation that he still intended to serve only one term.

“I told him I would hold him to it. I don’t joke with my name or my integrity,” she said.

Yesufu said her support for Obi is partly rooted in his emphasis on legacy and impact rather than duration in office.

“It’s not about how long; it’s about how well you do it,” she said.

She added that Obi often references global leaders who achieved significant reforms within a single term.

However, she expressed confidence that Obi would keep his promise, noting that he is known for honouring his word.

“I know he is a man who keeps his word,” she said.
