Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has criticised President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for causing hardship to Lagos residents during the commissioning of the Ojota-Opebi link bridge on Wednesday.

In a post on X, Soyombo said thousands of commuters in the Opebi-Ikeja corridor were stranded for several hours, with some trapped in traffic while others were forced to walk long distances.

He alleged that the event prioritized ceremonial pomp over public convenience.

“A bridge. A common bridge was why taxpayers suffered for hours,” he wrote, adding that citizens trekked from Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way to Allen Avenue, and from Customs to Opebi, as traffic gridlock worsened.

Soyombo questioned the necessity of the president’s personal involvement in commissioning a local bridge, describing it as tone-deaf governance.

“You built a bridge for the people; why suffer them first before letting them use it?” he asked, further criticising the disruption caused by the ceremony.

The bridge was commissioned by Godswill Akpabio on behalf of President Tinubu and was constructed by the Lagos State Government to improve connectivity between Ojota and Opebi, a key traffic corridor in Lagos.
