Bangladesh Floods Kill 51, Affect Over One Million People

Heavy rains and flash floods have killed at least 51 people across Bangladesh, leaving more than one million residents affected.

At least 51 people have died after days of heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding and landslides across Bangladesh. The disaster has displaced thousands of families and caused severe damage in several districts, including the capital, Dhaka.

Authorities said more than half of the deaths occurred in Cox’s Bazar, where over one million Rohingya refugees live in the world’s largest refugee settlement. Last week, floodwaters swept through a school in the district, killing several students and a teacher.

Floods Disrupt Lives Across Bangladesh

The government has evacuated families from high-risk areas and opened emergency shelters for displaced residents. Thousands of people are now staying in government facilities as rescue and relief efforts continue.

Meanwhile, Dhaka remains heavily affected. Many roads are flooded, causing major traffic disruptions. Residents reported water levels reaching knee height in some neighbourhoods. Local media also questioned the city’s drainage system after repeated flooding.

Bangladesh experiences seasonal flooding every year because of its low-lying geography and extensive river network. However, experts say climate change has made rainfall more frequent and more intense.

Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre official Sarder Udoy Raihan said conditions in the southeast may improve soon. However, he warned that continued monsoon rains could cause further flooding in northern and northeastern parts of the country.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as emergency response operations remain underway.
