Funso Doherty has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Lagos state on the platform of the African Democratic Congress.
Doherty, who rejoined the ADC on March 28, 2026, from the Peoples Democratic Party, made the announcement in a post on X on Saturday.
“Yesterday, with all sense of humility, a profound belief in the people of Lagos and an unshakable commitment to work for their welfare and prosperity, I declared my intention to contest the governorship of Lagos on the platform of the ADC in 2027,” he wrote.
The Lagos businessman and former governorship candidate said his decision to leave the PDP was informed by what he described as a “tragic travesty” within the party.
According to him, a recent court ruling had effectively handed control of the party to factions aligned with the ruling party, making it impossible for him to pursue his political ambitions within the PDP.
Doherty said the ADC now offers a credible platform for building a viable opposition in Lagos and pursuing a vision centred on the welfare and prosperity of residents.
Barring any last-minute declaration by another aspirant, Doherty is expected to battle Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour for the ADC governorship ticket.
Rhodes-Vivour, who was the 2023 governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Lagos, recently aligned with the ADC amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The expected contest between Doherty and Rhodes-Vivour is likely to shape the opposition landscape in Lagos as parties begin preparations for the next election cycle
