Peter Nworie Chukwu, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, is dead.
The cleric died on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the age of 60, according to a statement issued on Saturday by Donatus Oluwa Chukwu, vicar general of the diocese.
“With profound sorrow in our hearts, and trusting in the divine mercy of God, I write to notify you that our beloved bishop, Most Reverend Peter Nworie Chukwu, Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, has returned to the Father’s house,” the statement read.
The late bishop was born on November 5, 1965, and was ordained a priest on July 3, 1993.
He was consecrated and installed as the third bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki on August 19, 2021.
The diocese called on the faithful to keep the late cleric and the church in prayers.
“Please keep the Bishop and the Diocese in your prayers. Funeral arrangements will be announced later,” the statement added.
The church also prayed for the repose of his soul, asking that he rest in peace.
