Nevada Earthquake: 5.7 Magnitude Tremor Hits Near Silver Springs

A strong quake shakes Nevada, triggering aftershocks but no immediate damage reports.

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck near Silver Springs on Monday evening, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake hit at about 6:30 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located roughly 11 miles southeast of Silver Springs in Lyon County. The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of about six miles, increasing its potential to be felt across nearby communities, including areas close to Reno.

The USGS initially downgraded the earthquake to magnitude 5.5 before later confirming it as 5.7. Officials said the shaking was strong enough to move heavy furniture and could cause minor structural issues such as cracked walls or fallen plaster.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries following the quake. However, authorities noted that assessments were still ongoing.

In the hours after the main event, more than 15 aftershocks were recorded in the same region. These smaller quakes ranged between magnitudes 2.5 and 3.6, according to USGS data.

Nevada lies within an active seismic zone, and earthquakes of this scale are not uncommon. Experts say aftershocks are typical following a moderate quake and can continue for hours or even days.

Residents have been advised to remain alert and follow safety guidelines in case of further tremors.

While the situation appears under control, monitoring continues as seismic activity persists in the region.
