An Italian court has sentenced senior officials over the 2018 Genoa bridge disaster that claimed 43 lives.
An Italian court has handed prison sentences to several officials over the Genoa bridge disaster. Former Autostrade per l’Italia chief Giovanni Castellucci received a 12-year jail term. Prosecutors had asked for a longer sentence. Former motorway executive Michele Donferri Mitelli was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
The Morandi Bridge collapsed during a rainstorm in August 2018. The disaster sent cars and trucks crashing to the ground. Forty-three people lost their lives. The tragedy happened during one of Italy’s busiest holiday periods.
Castellucci was among 57 defendants standing trial in Genoa. He is already serving a six-year prison sentence for a separate road disaster in 2013. Families of the victims welcomed the ruling, with Emmanuel Diaz saying he was “very satisfied” with the verdict.
The court’s decision marks another major step in the long-running legal process over the Genoa bridge disaster.
