Airtel Nigeria has announced a temporary halt to its airtime and data credit services. This makes it the second major telecom operator in the country to suspend such offerings, following new regulatory requirements for digital lending.
In a statement signed by Femi Adesina, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Airtel explained that the suspended services previously allowed eligible prepaid customers to borrow airtime or data and repay upon their next recharge.
This decision comes just a day after MTN Nigeria also suspended its Xtratime service, citing the need to comply with the Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025. These new regulations introduce a compliance and licensing framework for companies offering digital or alternative consumer credit services, which now includes airtime and data credit products.
Airtel’s Position on the Suspension
Airtel assured customers that they can still purchase airtime and data through its existing channels without any interruptions. The company emphasized that this temporary suspension will not significantly impact its service quality nationwide.
Ismail Adeshina, Airtel Nigeria Director of Marketing, explained that the move is aimed at meeting regulatory requirements.
“This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving regulations. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” Adeshina stated.
Background: MTN’s Similar Action
Earlier, MTN Nigeria announced the temporary suspension of its Xtratime service, which also allowed eligible customers to borrow airtime or data for later repayment. Both companies are taking these steps to ensure full compliance with the new regulatory framework.
