France summons Elon Musk over X probe into politics and AI content

French authorities have summoned Elon Musk as investigations into X deepen.

France has called billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk for a voluntary interview in Paris as part of an ongoing probe into social media platform X. The investigation focuses on allegations that X’s algorithm may have been used to interfere in French politics.

The summons, first issued in February, is linked to a case opened in January 2025. French prosecutors later widened the investigation to include concerns over Grok, an AI chatbot tied to X, after reports that it spread Holocaust denial content and generated sexual deepfake images.

Authorities previously searched X’s Paris offices in February. The company strongly denied wrongdoing and described the raids as politically motivated. Musk also criticised the probe, calling it a political attack.

Former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino was also summoned earlier as part of the investigation. She stepped down in July last year after leading the company for two years.

French prosecutors said Musk’s appearance is voluntary, and the investigation will continue whether or not he attends. Officials have not confirmed the location or time of the interview.

The French case comes amid growing global scrutiny of X and Grok. Regulators in the United Kingdom and the European Union have also opened separate investigations into data protection issues and the creation of sexualised AI-generated deepfake images.

As pressure mounts across Europe, the case could become one of the biggest legal tests yet for Musk’s platform and its AI tools.
