Elon Musk misses French prosecutors interview in X probe

French authorities say Elon Musk did not appear for a voluntary interview linked to an ongoing probe into X.

French prosecutors confirmed that Musk failed to attend a scheduled interview in Paris on April 20 as part of an investigation into social media platform X, formerly Twitter. The probe focuses on alleged criminal offences tied to platform content, political interference claims, and the use of AI chatbot Grok.

According to prosecutors, Musk’s absence will not stop the case from moving forward. Officials said they had “taken note of the absence of the people summoned” and stressed that the investigation would continue.

The inquiry first began in January 2025 after complaints that X’s recommendation algorithm may have been used to influence French politics. It later expanded to include concerns over Grok allegedly generating Holocaust denial content and creating non-consensual sexual deepfake images.

Paris authorities previously raided X offices in February. Musk responded at the time by calling the investigation a “political attack.” X has also denied wrongdoing and described earlier allegations as baseless.

French prosecutors are reportedly examining suspected offences including illegal image manipulation, organised distribution of harmful material, and fraudulent data extraction.

Former X CEO Linda Yaccarino was also summoned because she led the company during the period under review.

The case adds to growing regulatory pressure on Musk’s companies across Europe and beyond, especially around artificial intelligence, platform safety, and user rights. It also follows reports that the U.S. Justice Department declined to support parts of the French investigation.

As scrutiny rises, the outcome of the France X probe could shape how governments regulate major tech platforms in the AI era.
