ADC accuses APC of fueling crisis in PRP after rumours coalition talks

Bolaji Abdullahi

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating the recent crisis in the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) following speculation about a possible opposition coalition.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson of the ADC, alleged that the development reflects a broader pattern of interference in opposition parties.

“This has to be the most shameless government in Nigeria’s history,” he said.

Abdullahi said the crisis began shortly after the PRP leadership, led by Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, paid a courtesy visit to the national chairman of the ADC about three weeks ago.

He added that rumours later emerged suggesting that the PRP was being considered as part of a coalition, although he said the claim was not true.

“Although this is not true, it took only that single whiff of speculation for a faction to emerge almost overnight in what had been a historically tranquil political party,” he said.

According to him, the emergence of the faction signals a shrinking democratic space under the ruling party.

“This is the reality of Nigeria’s shrinking democratic space under the APC,” he said.

Abdullahi said while the government may deny involvement, the pattern of crises within opposition parties is becoming increasingly clear.

“The government may continue to deny any involvement, insisting these are internal failures, but the pattern is visible,” he said.

He warned that such political tactics could have wider consequences for the country.

“A political strategy anchored on sabotaging every opposition platform is ultimately self-destructive,” he said.

“When people are left with no options, they are, in reality, left with no choice.”

As of the time of filing this report, the APC has not responded to the allegations.
