‘No nation can develop beyond the wellbeing of its workers’ — Obi marks Workers’ Day

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has commended Nigerian workers for their contributions to national development, while lamenting the harsh economic conditions they face.

In a post on X on Friday to mark Workers’ Day, Obi said the sacrifices of workers continue to sustain the country despite growing hardship.

“I warmly salute workers across the world, especially Nigerian workers whose daily sacrifices continue to sustain our families, communities, institutions, and national economy,” he said.

He said many workers are yet to receive fair compensation for their efforts.

“It is deeply painful that those who teach, heal, build, farm, and serve are still denied the dignity and fair reward their labour deserves,” he said.

Obi added that the current minimum wage can no longer guarantee a decent standard of living.

He cited rising inflation, food prices, and transportation costs as factors eroding the value of earnings.

“No nation can truly develop beyond the strength, productivity, and wellbeing of its workforce,” he said.

He warned that the country’s progress is tied to the condition of its workers.

“When workers suffer, the nation suffers. When workers are empowered, the nation prospers,” he said.

Obi also urged workers to leverage their political influence.

He said their votes remain a powerful tool in shaping governance.

“I urge Nigerian workers to recognise the strength they hold collectively,” he said.

He called on them to support leadership defined by competence and accountability.

According to him, a productive nation must be built on justice, fairness, and respect for labour.
