USA beat Australia 2-0 to move closer to winning group

The United States delivered a dominant display against Australia to strengthen their grip on Group D.

The United States defeated Australia 2-0 in Seattle to take a major step toward winning their World Cup group.

Despite missing injured captain Christian Pulisic, the tournament co-hosts controlled the game from the start. Australia defender Cameron Burgess scored an own goal in the 11th minute after pressure from striker Folarin Balogun.

The Americans doubled their lead just before half-time when Alex Freeman reacted quickest to a deflected effort from Sergino Dest and headed home. The goal was awarded after a VAR review overturned an offside flag.

Balogun, who scored twice in the USA’s opening win over Paraguay, impressed again but missed a clear chance early in the second half.

Australia struggled to create opportunities, with their best moments coming after the introduction of Nestory Irankunda at half-time. However, the Socceroos could not find a way past the American defence.

The victory gives the United States consecutive World Cup wins for the first time since 1930 and puts them on the brink of securing top spot in Group D.

The USA will face a third-placed team in the Round of 32 if they finish as Group D winners.
