NASU, SSANU begin indefinite strike over unresolved 2009 agreement

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has directed members to begin an indefinite strike from May 1, 2026.

In a circular dated April 30 and addressed to branch chairmen nationwide, the unions said the action followed a meeting with the minister of education, Tunji Alausa, and officials of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).

The unions said the meeting focused on the prolonged renegotiation of the 2009 agreements for non-teaching staff.

PACE OF RENEGOTIATION CAUSED STRIKE

They expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of discussions and the lack of a clear timeline for conclusion.

“The discussion at the meeting centred on the slow pace of renegotiation of 2009 agreements for the non-teaching staff unions and our demand for its conclusion not later than April 30, 2026,” the circular reads.

While noting that the government appealed for a suspension of the strike, the unions said authorities only withdrew the controversial 30 percent CONTTTA award letter without presenting a new offer.

They said there was no firm commitment on when the renegotiation would be concluded.

The unions insisted that their position remains unchanged and that only full approval of their demands would resolve the dispute.

Consequently, they directed members across federal and state universities, as well as inter-university centres, to commence a “total and comprehensive strike action” from 12:00 a.m. on May 1.

They also warned that monitoring teams have been deployed to ensure compliance.

The unions added that any branch that fails to comply with the directive will face sanctions.

“All NASU and SSANU members are hereby enjoined to comply with this directive for the survival of our existence in the system,” the circular reads.

The circular was jointly signed by NASU general secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU president, Mohammed Ibrahim, who called for total support from members.
