The federal government has commenced construction of a 1,500-bed student hostel at Yaba College of Technology and Lagos State University.
In a post on X on Friday, Tunji Alausa, minister of education, said the project will improve student welfare in tertiary institutions.
“Today, we broke ground on the NextGen hostel residence at Yaba College of Technology and Lagos State University,” he said.
Alausa said the facility will feature modern amenities, including a gym, games room, restaurant and canteen.
He added that the project will provide a safe and conducive living environment for students.
The minister said the government is executing the project through a public-private partnership with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and private investors.
He said the government will invest ₦250 billion to build additional hostels across over 90 institutions nationwide.
Furthermore, Alausa directed institutions to prioritise TETFund grants for rehabilitating hostels and academic facilities.
He warned that institutions that fail to comply will not receive funding.
The minister also outlined plans to upgrade infrastructure across campuses.
He said the government will deploy 24 mini-grids to improve power supply.
He added that 540 electric tricycles will be distributed to 36 institutions to support campus mobility.
Alausa said the hostel projects at Yaba Tech and LASU will be completed within 24 months.
