Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC), says the party has zoned its presidential ticket to the south ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, Galadima said the party has taken a firm position on zoning, adding that its immediate focus is to conclude its membership registration process and proceed to primaries.
“The NDC will submit its register either on the 5th or on the 6th of this month. Once we do that, we are good to go,” he said.
“We have zoned the party’s presidential candidature to the south. No missing words — we’ve zoned it to the south.”
He said the party would allow interested aspirants from the region to contest, urging potential candidates to ensure their names are included in the membership register.
“Whoever from the south wants to run should register quickly so their name gets into the register,” he said.
Galadima also used the opportunity to call on opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, to join the NDC.
“We are calling on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to jump ship and come to the NDC so that there will be a level playing ground for everybody,” he said.
He said the party’s decision to create a new platform followed developments within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as unfavourable to internal democracy.
“We didn’t leave the ADC until there was a judgment setting a booby trap for everybody within the party,” he said.
Galadima added that the NDC is positioning itself as an alternative platform for opposition politicians seeking a more competitive and transparent environment ahead of the elections.
