Global suspension could rule winger out of key 2026 World Cup matches.
FIFA has extended the suspension of Gianluca Prestianni worldwide, meaning the Benfica winger could miss Argentina’s opening games at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision follows a six-match ban initially issued by UEFA for homophobic conduct during a clash involving Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid. FIFA’s disciplinary committee ruled that the sanction will now apply across all competitions, including international fixtures.
As a result, Prestianni is ineligible for competitive matches during the suspension period. If selected by Argentina, he is expected to miss at least the first two group-stage games of the 2026 World Cup. However, the ban does not apply to friendly matches or domestic league games.
The 20-year-old winger recently broke into Argentina’s senior squad and is seen as a rising talent. His absence could impact team selection during the early stages of the tournament.
FIFA’s move highlights a tougher global stance on discrimination in football, ensuring disciplinary actions carry consequences across all levels of the game.
