Beijing Rejects UK Court Verdict
China has criticised the United Kingdom following the conviction of a former Hong Kong police officer accused of spying on dissidents in Britain.
In a statement released by the Chinese embassy on Thursday, Beijing described the court ruling as a politically motivated action aimed at damaging China’s image.
Former Officer Found Guilty in London
A London jury convicted former Hong Kong police superintendent Chung Biu Yuen, also known as Bill Yuen, alongside Peter Wai after a weeks-long trial.
Prosecutors accused both men of assisting a foreign intelligence service and carrying out surveillance activities against Hong Kong dissidents living in Britain.
Investigators said the pair targeted exiled pro-democracy activists and protesters through what authorities described as “shadow policing” operations.
China Calls Verdict Political
The Chinese embassy rejected the conviction and accused British authorities of abusing the legal process for political reasons.
According to the statement, the ruling aimed to encourage anti-China groups based in the UK and undermine Beijing’s reputation internationally.
Chinese officials also said they had lodged formal diplomatic complaints with British authorities over the matter.
Diplomatic Tensions Rise
Beijing urged the UK government to stop what it described as anti-China political actions.
The embassy warned that China would take necessary steps to protect its national interests.
The case adds to growing tensions between China and the UK over issues involving Hong Kong, national security, and political freedoms.
