Troops of Sector 1, Operation UDO KA, have destroyed a suspected ritual shrine and recovered improvised explosive devices during an operation targeting alleged members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and the Eastern Security Network in Enugu State.
The Nigerian Army disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday by Olabisi Ayeni.
Troops Respond to Intelligence Reports
According to the Army, the operation took place on May 6 in Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Security operatives reportedly acted on intelligence about alleged terrorist collaborators operating within the community.
The military said troops came under attack while advancing on foot during an intelligence-led patrol.
Gunmen allegedly opened fire from a building suspected to serve as a hideout for members of Indigenous People of Biafra and the Eastern Security Network.
Three Soldiers Injured During Gun Battle
The Army confirmed that three soldiers sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire.
Military personnel evacuated the injured troops to a medical facility for treatment.
“Despite the attack, troops maintained operational dominance, foiled the attack and secured the general area,” the statement said.
Explosives Trigger Fire Outbreak
The Army explained that explosive devices stored inside the building detonated during the gunfight.
The explosion reportedly triggered a fire that destroyed the structure.
Security operatives later recovered additional improvised explosive devices and improvised hand grenades from the area.
Troops also discovered and destroyed a suspected shrine allegedly used for ritual activities.
Suspect Arrested, Residents Urged to Stay Calm
The military said security personnel arrested one suspected collaborator during the operation.
Officials later handed the suspect over to the Nigeria Police Force in Ezeagu for further investigation.
The Army urged residents to remain calm and avoid sheltering criminal elements within their communities.
It also warned supporters and members of IPOB and ESN against engaging in unlawful activities.
“Security forces remain resolute in their determination to build peace in the region,” the statement added.
Residents Report Property Damage
Meanwhile, videos shared online showed several houses engulfed in flames after the operation.
Some residents claimed that at least seven compounds and about 10 houses were destroyed during the incident.
In one of the videos, residents alleged that an elderly sick woman became trapped inside one of the burning buildings.
