The Nigeria Customs Service has commenced disciplinary proceedings against one of its officers after a viral video showed the alleged extortion of a motorist along the Lagos-Benin Expressway.
The service confirmed the development in a video shared on its official X handle on Friday.
Viral Video Triggers Immediate Action
The footage reportedly captured the officer demanding up to ₦200,000 from a motorist during a roadside encounter.
Following the backlash online, the NCS moved swiftly to investigate the incident.
In the video released by the agency, officials paraded the implicated officer before handing him over to the Customs Police Unit for further investigation.
The service stated that the conduct violated its professional and ethical standards.
“Following the circulation of a viral video depicting unprofessional conduct by patrol officers, the Nigeria Customs Service initiated immediate disciplinary procedures in line with its zero-tolerance policy on misconduct,” the narration in the video stated.
Customs Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Policy
Controller of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Lagos, CSC Hussaini Abdullahi, addressed the matter during the parade.
He stressed that the service would not shield any officer found guilty of misconduct.
“The service wishes to reiterate that officers found culpable of violating ethical standards will be subjected to appropriate sanctions without compromise,” Abdullahi said.
He also confirmed the officer’s transfer to the Customs Police Unit for additional investigation and disciplinary measures.
“On behalf of the Controller, Federal Operations Unit Zone A, Controller G.I. Aliu, I hereby hand over the officer to the Head of the Customs Police Unit in Zone A for further investigation and other necessary action,” he added.
Public Demands Accountability
The incident sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians demanding stricter oversight of security personnel on highways.
The Nigeria Customs Service said it remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and discipline within its ranks.
The agency also assured the public that any officer involved in misconduct would face the appropriate sanctions under its regulations.
