Trump-Xi China summit puts US Taiwan policy in focus

President Donald Trump says Taiwan weapons sales will be discussed during his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The United States’ policy on Taiwan is expected to face intense scrutiny during President Donald Trump’s high-stakes visit to China. Trump confirmed that weapons sales to Taiwan would likely be part of his discussions with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Speaking ahead of the summit, Trump said Xi opposes continued US arms sales to Taiwan. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also acknowledged that Taiwan remains a major issue between Washington and Beijing.

China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has repeatedly pushed for reunification. The US maintains its long-standing “status quo” policy, opposing any forceful changes while continuing support for Taiwan’s defense capabilities.

The issue gained fresh attention after a bipartisan group of US senators urged the White House to move forward with a delayed $14 billion arms package for Taiwan. Some analysts fear Taiwan could become a bargaining chip during negotiations between Trump and Xi.

Experts also warned that any shift in US language or military commitments toward Taiwan could increase tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, even as American officials insist stability remains the priority.

The Trump-Xi summit comes amid growing global concerns over China’s military ambitions and the future security of Taiwan.
