Xabi Alonso agrees deal to become Chelsea manager

Chelsea have reached a full agreement with Xabi Alonso to become the club’s new head coach.

Xabi Alonso has accepted Chelsea’s offer after talks in London, with a four-year contract now completed and an official announcement expected soon.

Chelsea FC identified Alonso as their top managerial target following the departure of Liam Rosenior earlier this year.

The 44-year-old has been out of management since leaving Real Madrid CF in January. Before that, he enjoyed major success with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, leading the club to their first Bundesliga title during an unbeaten domestic season.

Alonso also has strong Premier League ties from his playing days with Liverpool FC, where he won the UEFA Champions League and became one of the league’s standout midfielders.

Chelsea turned to interim boss Calum McFarlane after Rosenior’s dismissal, but the club moved quickly to secure a permanent replacement ahead of next season.

Alonso’s arrival signals the beginning of a new era at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea look to rebuild after another difficult campaign.
