Tennessee Lady Volunteers Suspend Guard Ruby Whitehorn Indefinitely Following Felony Arrest

The Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball team has announced the indefinite suspension of their fourth-year guard, Ruby Whitehorn, after she was arrested on serious felony charges, including domestic assault and aggravated burglary.

Ruby Whitehorn’s attorney, Gregory P. Isaacs, confirmed last week that she plans to plead not guilty during her upcoming preliminary hearing scheduled for September 5. Meanwhile, the university has taken immediate action to suspend Whitehorn from all team activities as the legal process unfolds.

A spokesperson for the Tennessee athletics department shared in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday, “She is suspended indefinitely and is not participating in team activities.” This suspension comes in light of an incident that occurred on August 8 in Knox County.

According to police reports, officers responded to a call at approximately 4:15 p.m. regarding an altercation outside a woman’s residence involving Whitehorn. The 6-foot guard, originally from Detroit, was accused of forcibly kicking in both the front door and a bedroom door. Whitehorn allegedly told officers she was trying to retrieve her belongings—specifically her phone and passport—which the woman had taken and then locked behind the doors.

Isaacs, Whitehorn’s legal representative, has disputed the allegations made in the warrants, stating, “Our firm’s investigation has revealed that the factual claims outlined in the warrants are inaccurate and contradicted by eyewitness testimonies.” He added that Ruby Whitehorn is eager to clear her name and hopes for a swift resolution to the case.

Tennessee Lady Vols NCAA tournament 2025

On the basketball court, Whitehorn has been an important player for the Lady Volunteers. Last season, she started in 28 of 34 games and ranked fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 11.6 points per game, along with four rebounds per game. Before transferring to Tennessee, she began her collegiate career at Clemson University, where she was a starter in 62 of 66 games.

Whitehorn’s contributions were key to Tennessee’s 24-10 record in coach Kellie Harper’s debut season. The team advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA tournament, where they were eventually eliminated by Texas.
