US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as rising global energy tensions topped talks.
Marco Rubio held talks with Narendra Modi during a four-day visit to India focused on energy security, trade, and regional stability.
The meeting comes as the ongoing Iran conflict continues to disrupt global oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. India, which imports more than 80% of its energy needs, has been heavily affected by the crisis.
US officials said Rubio assured India that Washington would help prevent Iran from disrupting global energy markets. He further encouraged New Delhi to increase imports of American energy products.
Both leaders also discussed trade relations, and the future of the Quad alliance involving India, the US, Japan, and Australia.
The US and India are currently negotiating a broader trade agreement after Washington reduced tariffs on Indian goods earlier this year.
Rubio is expected to attend the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in Delhi before continuing his visit to other Indian cities.
