Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will assess its House of Assembly aspirants based on character, capability and ability to win elections, as the party prepares to commence screening ahead of primaries.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the party announced screening committees for aspirants contesting assembly seats across the 36 states.
The screening exercise will run from May 23 to May 25.
In a memo signed by Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe, national chairman of the party, and Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, national secretary of the party, the NDC said aspirants must meet certain conditions before purchasing nomination forms.
The party said aspirants must be financially up to date and show evidence of contributing to the growth of the party.
It added that aspirants must also meet constitutional requirements for the offices they seek.
The NDC said aspirants with criminal records or those under investigation by anti-graft agencies risk disqualification.
The party also warned aspirants against coming to screening venues with thugs.
“Any aspirant who is accompanied by thugs and miscreants to the venue of the screening stands the risk of being disqualified,” the statement read.
The party said each state screening committee would have three members — a chairman, secretary and one member.
