New Security Unit Targets Rising Violent Crimes
The Bauchi State Police Command has reinforced its fight against violent crime and terrorism with the launch of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).
State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, announced the move on Tuesday during the official inauguration of the unit in Bauchi.
He said the initiative will address growing security threats, including kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, and related crimes across the state.
Speaking on the theme, “Enhancing Accountability, Strengthening Public Trust and Promoting Professionalism in Policing,” Aliyu stressed that the unit marks a fresh security strategy.
Police Promise Lawful, Professional Operations
Aliyu said the VCRU will operate within the law while respecting human rights.
He explained that the unit will rely on credible intelligence and maintain close cooperation with local communities.
According to him, the unit is not a renamed tactical squad. Instead, it introduces a new operational structure built on professionalism, discipline, accountability, and public trust.
As a result, the command hopes to improve crime response while strengthening public confidence.
54 Officers Pass Screening, Begin Deployment
The police command carried out a strict and transparent screening process for officers chosen for the unit.
Aliyu said officers faced interviews and assessments based on integrity, discipline, physical fitness, operational skill, and knowledge of human rights.
Following the process, 54 officers qualified for the first deployment.
He added that the officers completed intensive training before deployment.
The training covered human rights, lawful arrests, intelligence-led policing, tactical response, detention procedures, use of force, and professional conduct.
Therefore, the command expects officers to act with discipline and respect for human dignity.
New Commander Takes Charge
Aliyu appointed CSP Abdulrazak Musa as commander of the unit in Bauchi State.
He described Musa as an experienced officer with strong success in handling kidnapping, robbery, and banditry cases within and outside the state.
Because of his track record, the command believes he can lead the unit effectively.
Civilian Oversight Board to Boost Transparency
The police command also introduced a civilian oversight board for the VCRU.
According to Aliyu, the board includes representatives from the judiciary, civil society groups, traditional institutions, religious bodies, women groups, youth groups, and community leaders.
He said the board will improve transparency and strengthen trust between residents and the police.
In addition, it will collect public feedback and support accountability systems without interfering in police operations.
Police Seek Public Support
Aliyu emphasized that security remains a shared duty.
Therefore, he urged community leaders, youth groups, religious bodies, and residents to provide timely and credible information to support crime prevention.
He also praised the Inspector-General of Police for driving reforms that aim to build a trusted and respected police force.
Likewise, he appreciated the Bauchi State Government for supporting security agencies.
He urged members of the newly formed unit to stay disciplined, accountable, and respectful of citizens’ rights.
“The public will judge this unit not only by arrests made or operations conducted but by discipline, professionalism, respect for the law and relationship with the public,” he said.
Emir Backs Security Initiative
The Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleimanu Adamu, represented by the Wazirin Bauchi, Muhammad Kari, praised the police command for its commitment to protecting lives and property.
He described the inauguration as a bold step toward improving the state’s security system and strengthening national safety.
Furthermore, he acknowledged Governor Bala Mohammed for supporting security efforts across Bauchi State.
He also praised the police commissioner for his leadership in maintaining peace and stability.
Finally, the emir pledged the continued support, goodwill, and prayers of the traditional institution for the success of the initiative.
