The Israeli military has ordered residents to leave the southern Lebanese city of Tyre as fresh strikes hit Hezbollah targets.
Israel has ordered the evacuation of parts of the Lebanese city of Tyre after launching another wave of air strikes against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.
The Israeli military said it was “compelled to act forcefully” because Hezbollah had violated the US-brokered ceasefire. Lebanese media reported that Israeli strikes killed at least three people in the town of Choukine on Wednesday.
Hezbollah accused Israel of repeatedly breaking the ceasefire. Further stating that its fighters were clashing with Israeli troops north of the Litani River, around 30km from the Israeli border. The latest escalation follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement that ground operations against Hezbollah would expand. This comes after recent drone attacks on Israeli troops and civilians.
The growing violence threatens ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the wider regional conflict involving Israel, Iran and Hezbollah. Iran has insisted that any future agreement must include Lebanon, while Israel says it will continue military operations against if necessary.
Since fighting began in March, Lebanon’s health ministry says more than 3,200 people have been killed. Israel says 23 soldiers and four civilians have died during the conflict.
