Iran and US exchange new air strikes amid stalled peace talks

New military strikes have raised tensions in the Gulf despite ongoing efforts to secure a lasting peace deal.

The United States and Iran have reported a new wave of air strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides claiming to have targeted military facilities over the weekend.

The US Central Command said it carried out what it described as self-defence strikes on Iranian radar systems, drone control stations and military sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island. Washington said the operation followed the downing of a US drone and threats to ships operating in regional waters.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it retaliated by targeting a US-linked air base used in previous operations against Iran. The group warned that any further attacks would trigger a stronger response.

The latest escalation comes as negotiations over a broader US-Iran agreement remain stalled. Reports indicate President Donald Trump requested changes to a proposed framework that includes a 60-day ceasefire, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and renewed talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.

With no breakthrough in negotiations, tensions remain high around one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.
