India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned after days of nationwide protests over alleged leaks of medical entrance examination papers.
The demonstrations, led by the youth movement known as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), demanded accountability and reforms to India’s examination system. Protesters accused authorities of failing to prevent exam papers from being leaked and sold before the tests.
Pradhan announced his resignation on Saturday, describing it as a response to growing public pressure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not yet confirmed whether he has accepted the resignation.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke welcomed the minister’s decision but said the movement would continue. He called for compensation for the families of students who reportedly died by suicide after learning that the examination results would be cancelled. He also demanded action against police officers accused of using excessive force during recent protests.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) praised Pradhan’s decision. Party president Nitin Nabin said the resignation reflected integrity and responsibility in public office.
The protests intensified after clashes between demonstrators and police, attracting broader public support.
The controversy centres on allegations that entrance examinations for India’s highly competitive medical schools were compromised. Authorities were forced to order millions of students to retake the exams, triggering widespread anger among young people across the country.
