Community Wakes to Deadly Midnight Attack
Residents of Ayegunle Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State are reeling from a deadly bandit attack that left one person dead and more than 30 others abducted.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, June 1, 2026. According to reports, the gunmen struck at about 2:25 a.m., throwing the community into panic.
During the assault, one resident lost his life. In addition, another person sustained injuries and is receiving treatment.
Travelers Among Victims
Sources within the community disclosed that two residents, a man and a woman, were among those kidnapped by the attackers.
However, most of the victims were passengers travelling in a commercial bus.
The gunmen reportedly intercepted the vehicle while it was passing through the area. They then forcefully took the passengers into captivity.
As a result, families of the abducted victims have been left in distress as they await updates on their whereabouts.
Police Launch Rescue Operation
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, confirmed the incident.
He spoke with journalists during the Passing-Out Parade of 565 newly trained police constables at the Command Headquarters in Lokoja.
According to the police chief, security operatives have already launched an operation to rescue the victims and track down the attackers.
Furthermore, he assured residents that investigations are ongoing.
Authorities Intensify Search for Attackers
Kankarofi stated that police officers are working tirelessly to secure the release of the abducted persons.
He also stressed that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those behind the attack.
Consequently, security agencies have increased surveillance in the area as part of measures to prevent further incidents.
The attack adds to growing concerns over insecurity and abductions across several communities in Kogi State.
