Four Killed in Deadly Ambush
The Anambra State Government has pledged to track down gunmen responsible for a deadly attack that claimed four lives along the Amansea–Awa–Ufuma Road in Orumba North Local Government Area.
The victims included two police officers and two civilians. The attackers struck on Sunday night while a convoy was returning from an official assignment.
Chief of Staff Escapes Unhurt
The convoy carried Chief Ben Nwankwo, Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Nwankwo had represented the governor at an event before heading back to Awka.
Although he escaped unharmed, several civilians in the convoy sustained injuries during the attack.
Sources said the gun battle lasted for several minutes before the assailants fled the scene.
Gunmen Laid Ambush Along Route
Eyewitnesses said the attackers hid in a nearby bush before launching the assault.
As the convoy approached, the gunmen opened fire, triggering panic in surrounding communities.
Residents reported hearing sustained gunshots as security operatives exchanged fire with the attackers.
Government Condemns Attack
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Information and Value Orientation, Law Mefor, described the attack as shocking and unfortunate.
He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured residents that security agencies were already investigating the incident.
“The Anambra State Government is shocked by the attack on the convoy of the Chief of Staff to the Governor on Sunday night while returning from an official assignment,” Mefor said.
Security Agencies Launch Manhunt
According to the commissioner, the attack was not only directed at an individual but also targeted the peace and stability of the state.
He stressed that authorities would leave no stone unturned in identifying and prosecuting those responsible.
“The police and other security agencies are working to find and bring everyone involved in this evil act to justice,” he stated.
State Reaffirms Commitment to Security
Mefor noted that the incident was an isolated case after more than a year of relative peace across the state.
He added that the government remains determined to eliminate criminal activities and strengthen security.
“This isolated incident will not weaken our resolve to rid Anambra of all forms of crime,” he said.
