Tinubu Deploys 79 Locally-Assembled Ambulances to Boost Emergency Healthcare

FG Rolls Out Ambulances to Strengthen Emergency Response

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched 79 locally-assembled advanced ambulances for tertiary hospitals across Nigeria.

The initiative aims to strengthen emergency healthcare services nationwide. Furthermore, it seeks to improve patient access to timely medical attention during critical situations.

The ambulances were commissioned in Lagos on Tuesday. The Chief Medical Director of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Professor Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, represented the President at the event.

Hospitals to Benefit Under NEMSAS Programme

The Federal Government will distribute the ambulances to tertiary health institutions across the country.

The vehicles fall under the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS). Consequently, healthcare facilities will gain stronger emergency response capabilities.

The deployment also forms part of activities marking the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration.

According to government officials, the project supports ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Initiative Targets Reduction in Preventable Deaths

Speaking at the ceremony, Adeyemo said the ambulances would enhance the speed and quality of emergency medical services.

He explained that faster transportation could save lives in cases where delayed treatment often leads to complications or death.

“These ambulances will improve the movement of patients from homes, schools, markets, highways, and other locations to hospitals where they can receive timely medical attention,” he said.

As a result, patients facing emergencies will have quicker access to life-saving care.

Ambulances Equipped With Modern Medical Technology

Adeyemo disclosed that the vehicles operate as Advanced Life Support units.

In addition, they contain modern communication systems and emergency medical equipment.

The technology allows hospitals to receive alerts before patients arrive. Therefore, medical teams can prepare for treatment in advance.

He noted that this feature would improve coordination between emergency responders and healthcare facilities.

Local Production Highlights Nigerian Capacity

The LUTH Chief Medical Director stated that Nigerian manufacturers assembled the ambulances locally.

Moreover, local experts installed all emergency medical equipment inside the vehicles.

According to him, the project demonstrates Nigeria’s growing capacity in healthcare technology and industrial production.

“These ambulances are a testament to Nigeria’s ability to produce world-class emergency response vehicles locally,” Adeyemo said.

Beyond healthcare benefits, he added that the initiative would stimulate local manufacturing and create employment opportunities.

Dual-Fuel System Supports Sustainability Goals

Adeyemo further revealed that the ambulances run on both Premium Motor Spirit and Compressed Natural Gas.

Consequently, the vehicles align with the Federal Government’s energy diversification strategy.

The dual-fuel technology also supports efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions.

Project Supports Ongoing Health Sector Reforms

The ambulance programme complements reforms led by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.

According to Adeyemo, improving emergency transportation remains essential for reducing mortality rates nationwide.

He stressed that access to healthcare involves more than hospital infrastructure alone.

“Healthcare facilities must be accessible when emergencies occur. Efficient emergency transportation is essential to saving lives,” he said.

FG Seeks Broader Adoption of Local Solutions

Meanwhile, Adeyemo encouraged state governments, local councils, and private organisations to embrace locally-produced emergency response vehicles.

He said Nigeria now possesses the capacity to meet future emergency transportation needs through local production.

Ultimately, the Federal Government expects the nationwide distribution of the ambulances to strengthen referral systems, improve access to critical care, and support efforts to reduce illness and death across the country.
