Russia says Ukraine launched an unprecedented drone assault on St Petersburg and surrounding areas.
Ukrainian drones targeted St Petersburg and the surrounding Leningrad region on Saturday in what Russian authorities described as an unprecedented attack.
Officials said more than 140 drones were intercepted over the region, while Governor Alexander Beglov urged residents to remain indoors for the first time since the war began more than four years ago. Authorities also reported a fire at a military facility and minor damage to several buildings.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the operation targeted Russian military infrastructure, including naval facilities in Kronstadt and an oil depot in the Krasnodar region. He described the strikes as a response to ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine.
The attack came as Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the final day of the annual St Petersburg International Economic Forum. It also followed Zelensky’s recent call for direct peace talks, which Putin rejected.
The latest strike highlights Ukraine’s growing long-range drone capabilities and comes amid continued deadlock over efforts to end the war.
As both sides intensify attacks and reject key peace proposals, the conflict shows little sign of easing despite renewed calls for negotiations.
