A late own goal denied Egypt a historic victory as Belgium fought back to earn a point in their World Cup opener.
Egypt came close to securing their first-ever FIFA World Cup win but were held to a 1-1 draw by Belgium in their opening Group G match in Seattle.
Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead in the 21st minute with a powerful strike from outside the box that beat Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The Pharaohs maintained their advantage for much of the match and looked set to end their long wait for a World Cup victory.
However, Belgium levelled in the 66th minute when Mohamed Hany turned Thomas Meunier’s cross into his own net while trying to stop substitute Romelu Lukaku from scoring. Lukaku had only been on the pitch for moments before influencing the equaliser.
Egypt also threatened to score again, with Mohamed Salah and Mostafa Zico both testing Courtois. Belgium improved after the introduction of Lukaku, while Kevin De Bruyne came close with a free-kick that struck the post.
The result means Egypt remain without a win in eight World Cup matches dating back to their tournament debut in 1934. Belgium avoided a disappointing start to their Group G campaign.
Egypt and Belgium now turn their focus to crucial second group matches as the battle for qualification continues.
