The two women pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offences linked to a notorious bandit leader.
A court has sentenced the mother and sister of a suspected terrorist to 40 years imprisonment after both women admitted to supporting and concealing terrorist activities.
The court delivered the judgment after the two defendants pleaded guilty to multiple counts in a terrorism-related charge filed by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.
According to court records, the women aided and abetted the activities of a known bandit leader, Battujo, by passing information to him through telephone conversations. One of the convicts also admitted concealing information about her son’s terrorist activities, while the other confessed to withholding information about illegally acquired firearms she saw during a visit to his forest camp.
Justice Yilwa imposed 20 years imprisonment for each count. However, the sentences will run concurrently, meaning the convicts will serve their terms simultaneously before undergoing rehabilitation.
The ruling highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to hold individuals accountable for supporting terrorism and banditry in Nigeria.
