Security forces have reportedly regained control after an early morning attack near Niger’s main international airport.
Gunfire and explosions were heard on Thursday morning at Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, the capital of Niger. Residents said the shooting began around 6:00 a.m. local time and lasted for about two hours.
Witnesses told local media that the attack targeted the airport entrance. Security forces reportedly repelled the assault and launched an operation to track down the attackers, who allegedly fled the scene after abandoning their weapons.
Niger’s authorities have not yet issued an official statement, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident comes months after suspected jihadists attacked the same airport in January, leaving several soldiers injured and multiple attackers dead.
Niger continues to battle a decade-long Islamist insurgency. In recent weeks, authorities strengthened security around the airport by expanding perimeter fencing, installing surveillance cameras, and clearing nearby settlements cited as security risks.
Investigations are ongoing as security forces work to determine who was behind the latest attack on Niamey Airport.
