Anambra Police arrest couple over alleged abuse of 10-year-old boy

Police have detained a couple in Anambra State following allegations of severe child abuse that sparked public outrage.

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a woman, Chisom Chukwukere, and her husband, Chukwudi, over the alleged abuse of a 10-year-old boy in Awada, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The arrest followed the circulation of a viral video showing the child with extensive injuries across his body. Police said the couple allegedly used burning plastic to inflict severe burns on the victim.

Authorities also placed the couple’s infant child under protective care through the Anambra State Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare. The infant has since been handed over to a family member while investigations continue.

The case attracted widespread condemnation after videos emerged showing the suspect pleading for the release of her infant, claiming the child was unwell and needed her care.

Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had intensified investigations and assured the public that anyone found responsible would face justice.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting children from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence through collaboration with relevant agencies and child protection groups.

Police say investigations are ongoing, with authorities determined to ensure justice for the victim and strengthen child protection efforts across Anambra State.
