Switzerland beat Canada to win Group B

Switzerland secured top spot in Group B with a 2-1 victory over Canada, while the hosts still advanced to the knockout stage for the first time.

Switzerland booked their place in the World Cup last 32 as Group B winners after defeating co-hosts Canada 2-1 in Vancouver. Goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi early in the second half sealed the win and ensured Switzerland finished above Canada in the standings.

Vargas opened the scoring less than a minute after the restart, finishing calmly from Manzambi’s cross. Eleven minutes later, Manzambi doubled Switzerland’s lead after being set up by Breel Embolo. Canada responded through substitute Promise David, who scored just 76 seconds after coming on, but the hosts could not find an equaliser.

The result means Switzerland have reached the knockout stage in four consecutive World Cups, joining Argentina and France as the only nations to achieve the feat. Canada, despite the defeat, also progressed after finishing second in Group B, marking the country’s first-ever qualification for the World Cup knockout rounds.

Switzerland will remain in Vancouver for their Round of 32 match on 3 July, while Canada travel to Los Angeles to face the runners-up of Group A on 28 June.

Switzerland march on as Group B winners, while Canada celebrate a historic first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage.
