Nigerian rapper Ycee has sparked fresh conversations after sharing his concerns about the state of education in Nigeria. During a recent interview, the music star said society no longer values academic excellence the way it once did. As a result, many young people now see less reason to pursue education.
According to Ycee, the country has moved beyond what was once known as “Yahoo culture.” He believes a new trend has taken over. “Nigerian society is no longer celebrating academic excellence. People don’t even want to go to school anymore. It’s not even Yahoo culture anymore; now we have a ‘Peller culture,’” he said.
The rapper also spoke about what he described as an “Olodo uprising.” In his view, ignorance is gradually becoming acceptable, while learning and critical thinking receive less attention. “This ‘Olodo’ uprising we are witnessing is terrible. It feels like we are trying so hard to accommodate ignorance so people won’t feel bad, and now they seem to be the majority,” he stated. Furthermore, he pointed to challenges facing the education sector, including insecurity and attacks on schools.
Meanwhile, Ycee questioned the message being passed to young Nigerians when people gain fame and wealth through controversial online content. His comments have since divided opinions across social media. While some Nigerians agree that academic achievement is no longer celebrated enough, others argue that digital platforms have simply created alternative routes to success beyond the classroom.
