Lionel Messi inspired Argentina to a dramatic 3-2 victory after the world champions trailed by two goals.
Argentina came from 2-0 down to defeat Egypt 3-2 and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The defending champions looked headed for a shock exit before a late rally turned the match around.
Egypt took control through first-half goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico, while goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved a Lionel Messi penalty and made several crucial stops. However, Cristian Romero pulled one back in the 79th minute before Messi equalised five minutes later. Enzo Fernandez completed the comeback with a stoppage-time header.
Argentina had already survived a difficult round-of-32 clash against Cape Verde, while Egypt entered the match after recording their first-ever World Cup victory against Australia. The South Americans will now face either Colombia or Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
Argentina remain on course to defend their World Cup title after another dramatic escape.
