The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has accused former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of violating the conditions of a court-approved medical visit and announced the arrest of his personal physician, Prof. Bello Abubakar, over alleged false statements.
The commission said El-Rufai used the medical visit on Tuesday, July 7, to hold a meeting with political associates instead of receiving medical treatment as approved by the court.
ICPC Alleges Medical Visit Was Abused
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the anti-graft agency said it approved the hospital visit in compliance with a court order and ensured that its medical and security personnel conducted themselves professionally throughout the exercise.
According to the commission, El-Rufai departed from the purpose of the visit by engaging in political discussions rather than focusing on medical consultation.
“During the hospital visit on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, officers of the Commission’s medical and security team conducted themselves professionally and respected the defendant’s privacy.”
Doctor Arrested Over Alleged False Statements
The ICPC also confirmed the arrest of Prof. Bello Abubakar, alleging that the physician made false statements regarding El-Rufai’s medical condition and treatment.
The commission did not immediately disclose the specific charges against the doctor. However, it insisted that investigators acted within the law while handling the matter.
Court Adjourns Case
The commission further disclosed that the court adjourned the case until July 15, 2026.
The adjournment will allow the court to hear El-Rufai’s application seeking the trial judge’s recusal and await the decision of the Kaduna State Chief Judge on a petition requesting the transfer of the case.
ADC Condemns Arrest
Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) criticised the ICPC over the arrest of El-Rufai’s physician.
The party alleged that operatives assaulted the former governor’s wife during the hospital visit and denied him adequate medical care despite doctors’ recommendation for admission. The ICPC has not accepted those allegations.
