Hollywood is mourning the loss of Kaylee Hottle, the young actress who played Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. She died at the age of 18 after a car crash in Maryland, USA. The tragic incident happened on Tuesday morning. Police believe excessive speed may have caused the single-vehicle crash. A 19-year-old driver survived with minor injuries, while another passenger was not hurt.
Kaylee’s father, Joshua Hottle, confirmed the heartbreaking news through a Facebook video in American Sign Language (ASL). The Hottle family is deaf. Meanwhile, the Texas School for the Deaf also paid tribute to the actress. The school said,
“Our hearts are with Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time.”
It also urged the public to respect the family’s privacy and avoid speculation about the accident. Warner Bros. also honoured Kaylee with a heartfelt tribute on social media.
Fans around the world knew Kaylee for her touching role as Jia, a deaf orphan who shared a special bond with Kong. She appeared alongside Rebecca Hall, Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown and Dan Stevens. Her performance in the 2024 sequel earned her a Saturn Award nomination for Best Younger Performer. Off-screen, Kaylee proudly spoke about deaf representation in Hollywood. She once said,
“I think some people see ASL and deafness as a barrier or a gift, but it’s just a language, and deaf is just deaf. We can do many things, just not hear.”
Beyond acting, Kaylee inspired many young deaf people to chase their dreams without fear. She also appeared in commercials and an episode of Magnum P.I. Looking back on her career, she shared a message that continues to inspire many.
“I’m acting in monster movies as a deaf person. I want deaf people to know that they can do that too, just like me. There are no limits.”
Although her life ended too soon, her talent, courage and powerful message will continue to inspire fans across the world.
