Eleven people were rescued after a seaplane crashed into the water off the coast of Washington state, leaving several passengers injured, authorities said.
According to officials, the aircraft had 10 passengers and one pilot on board when the accident occurred. Everyone was successfully pulled from the water after the crash.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office said multiple victims suffered injuries ranging from head trauma and broken bones to cuts and other wounds. One person remains in critical condition.
Kenmore Air, the operator of the flight, confirmed that the aircraft departed from Lake Union in Seattle before the incident. The company said four injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals. The remaining passengers were taken to the Bellingham Coast Guard Station.
San Juan County Sheriff Eric Peter said a nearby civilian boat witnessed the crash and immediately rushed to assist with rescue efforts before emergency responders arrived.
When deputies reached the scene, they found the seaplane engulfed in flames and beginning to sink into the water.
Emergency teams quickly secured the area and continued rescue operations to ensure everyone on board was accounted for.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. An investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
