Belgium have appointed former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as their new head coach on a contract that will keep him in charge until the end of Euro 2028.
The 49-year-old replaces Rudi Garcia, who left the role after Belgium were eliminated by eventual champions Spain in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Van Bommel will officially begin his duties on 15 August.
The former midfielder arrives after a successful spell with Royal Antwerp. During his two years at the club, he guided them to the Belgian Pro League title, the Belgian Cup and the Belgian Super Cup.
Speaking after his appointment, Van Bommel described the role as a great honour.
He said Belgium possesses outstanding players and enormous potential. He added that his aim is to build a disciplined, ambitious and fearless team capable of competing with the best.
Belgian Football Association sporting director Vincent Mannaert praised Van Bommel’s experience as both a player and coach. He said the appointment would help the Red Devils continue to improve and achieve better results.
Van Bommel’s coaching staff will include Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond.
His first competitive assignment will be Belgium’s UEFA Nations League matches against Italy, France and Turkey in September and October.
