Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine ahead of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Britain on Monday.
Zelensky will become Burnham’s first international guest since taking office last week. Downing Street said the visit reflects the strong relationship between the two countries.
During the visit, both leaders will tour a naval base where Burnham will announce a new defence partnership. The UK will share the intellectual property behind its Stone Cloak electronic warfare system, allowing Ukraine to manufacture the technology on a larger scale.
Burnham described the system as a proven British innovation that has already demonstrated its value on the battlefield. He said it would strengthen the security of both nations while helping Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression.
Stone Cloak is a compact electronic jammer designed to prevent drones from being detected. The Ministry of Defence has already supplied thousands of the devices to Ukrainian forces. The technology will also be integrated into Britain’s future long-range weapons programme, including Project Brakestop.
The leaders will also meet more than 200 Ukrainian personnel participating in Exercise Sea Breeze. This is a maritime training programme in the UK focused on improving combat skills and mine-countermeasure operations in the Black Sea.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the UK has remained one of Ukraine’s strongest allies, committing £25 billion in military and financial support.
Following Burnham’s election victory, Zelensky thanked the new prime minister for maintaining Britain’s commitment to Ukraine. Burnham assured him that the UK’s support would remain firm until a lasting and just peace is achieved.
