President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his intention to seek re-election in 2027, declaring that anyone who wants to unseat him must defeat him through a tough political contest.
The President also defended the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting the electoral body has not intimidated any political party.
Tinubu made the remarks on Tuesday while receiving members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), led by its President, Most Rev. Matthew Ndagoso, at the State House in Abuja.
Tinubu expresses confidence ahead of 2027
The President dismissed claims that INEC favours the ruling party.
According to him, opposition parties have the same opportunity to compete in the next general election.
“I asked for this job. I’m in it. Those who will take it from me will try. They will try. All is fair in politics, and it’s equal opportunity.”
Speaking further, Tinubu said he would not make the contest easy for his opponents.
“I’m ready, but I won’t give them a red carpet. I won’t offer them the leash to tie me and rope me. No, we wrestle each other to the finishing point.”
President defends INEC
Tinubu maintained that INEC has remained neutral in conducting elections.
He argued that political parties questioning the commission’s neutrality should focus on resolving their internal challenges.
“INEC, you mentioned, is neutral. They’ve never, never intimidated anybody. If political opponents are crying wolves, maybe they are afraid of their own shadows and the uncertainty in the companies they keep, not me.”
Tinubu highlights achievements
The President also defended his administration’s performance despite the economic and security challenges facing the country.
He said his government inherited many of the current problems but has continued to pursue reforms aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
Tinubu pointed to the uninterrupted academic calendar in public universities as one of the administration’s achievements.
“You can’t say a four-year course is not four years. ASUU is not on strike. They are not bringing agony to your homes. Is that not an answer to our prayers? To me, that’s an answer.”
He acknowledged that security challenges remain but stressed that his administration would continue working to strengthen the country.
