A University of Lagos (UNILAG) student has emerged as the overall winner of the Huawei Global ICT Competition, defeating contestants from universities around the world at the final held in Shenzhen, China.
Peter A. Fagbola, a Systems Engineering student in the university’s Faculty of Engineering and a member of the ABS-CITS Huawei Academy, secured first place in one of the world’s leading technology competitions.
The university announced the achievement on Friday through its official X account.
Fagbola’s journey to the global title
Fagbola began his campaign at the national stage, where he emerged as the overall winner of the Cloud and AI Track while representing UNILAG against students from other Nigerian universities.
He later advanced to the Southern Africa Regional Competition. There, he competed as part of a team that won first place.
The victory earned the team a place at the global final in Shenzhen. Subsequently, they outperformed contestants from universities across the world to claim the championship.
Huawei recognises Nigerian winner
Following the competition, Huawei invited Fagbola and other winners to the Huawei Education Summit in Abuja. The company recognised the winners during the event in honour of their outstanding performances at the global competition.
UNILAG celebrates achievement
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, congratulated Fagbola on behalf of the university’s Senate, staff and students. She described the achievement as evidence of his dedication and the quality of education and training available at the institution.
Furthermore, the university said the victory had placed UNILAG and Nigeria firmly on the global technology map. It also expressed hope that Fagbola’s success would inspire more students to pursue excellence and participate in international technology competitions.
