Typhoon Kalmaegi touches down in the central parts of the Philippines, ripping through the place and taking lives. Locally known as Tino, Kalmaegi is the 20th tropical cyclone causing havoc across the archipelago in 2025. At least two deaths have already been confirmed by authorities as floods engulf entire communities together with the fierce winds disabling structures.
Path of Destruction
Kalmaegi makes landfall soon after midnight in Silago town, Southern Leyte province. Harbored inside this typhoon, it found sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 195 kph as it rumbled across central regions. By 25 kph, it rumbles westward pure across Eastern Samar, Bohol, Cebu and Negros Occidental.
Victims and Immediately Felt Effects
An elderly villager drowned in the floodwaters of Southern Leyte, while a fallen tree killed another resident in Bohol province. Flash floods keep residents on top of their rooftops in Cebu cities Liloan and Mandaue. Some watery streets lead to head levels of submerging cars and floating vehicles. Strong winds ripped roofs off about 300 shanties on Homonhon island, Eastern Samar.
Heroic Rescues Amid Hardships
Philippine Red Cross teams receive desperate calls from trapped individuals but delay operations because of floating cars and debris. Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang states that rescuers await floods to subside before intervening.
Coast guard personnel evacuate residents in Leyte with the help of boats and ropes. In Cebu, catching the runaway fishes from their farm inundation resuming receding waters is what’s happening to the locals There are over 3,500 stranded passengers in seaports because authorities suspended the operations of ferries and fishing boats.
